Barry's Bootcamp was bringing its clients HIIT workouts before HIIT was even a thing. It's a thing now. A big thing. So glad you asked! Fitness experts have cited higher calorie burn in a shorter time, and a faster metabolism that leads to calorie AND fat burn that continues for the 24 hours following the workout. Other side effects include: athletic endurance, increased awesomeness and sex appeal.
These are not your gym teacher's creaky treadmills. All Barry's locations are equipped with Woodway treadmills, the absolute best in the world. These super-quiet machines are the most comfortable surface you'll ever run on. The runs at Barry's are varied, so you'll never be bored. You'll alternate between sprints, inclines, dynamic mode (more on that later), and assume other positions on the treadmill you've never thought possible.
Not unless you want to. Our resistance training includes the use of hand weights, resistance bands, booty bands (for your, you know, booty), and all kinds of equipment to keep it interesting. No Olympic-style weightlifting here. Our workout is designed to keep you moving through a series of exercises that will tone and sculpt your body. If you want to get really toned, you'll choose weights just heavy enough to make your muscles burn for 1-2 minutes of repetitions (our instructors will help you determine that weight). If you want to bulk up, you'll want to gravitate towards heavier weights that you can't lift for more than 8-12 reps. Whatever your goal, you can achieve it at Barry's.
Each day at Barry's is dedicated to different parts of your body, so you can attend class on the day that corresponds to the part of your body you want to focus on (and reduce the risk of injury by over training the same body part). Those days never change, so you always know our schedule, which makes it easy to attend on your favorite days. For best results, come five days and you'll get the full body attention that you crave. The truth is that you're going to get a little of everything on each day, particularly your core, because a strong core is the foundation of a healthy body.
Eventually, unless you know something the rest of us don't. Study after study shows that everyone dies. But study after study also shows that people who exercise regularly live longer, healthier lives. But you won't die at Barry's. In fact, you'll be Barry'd alive. With regular exercise you'll live longer and stronger. At Barry's you can go at your own pace. Whatever level of fitness you are at, you will get a great workout. Our trainers call out speeds for beginner, intermediate and expert levels, but you are welcome to run at any speed you can. What's important is that you push yourself to YOUR limit. Work outside of your comfort zone. That's where the changes happen.

There are a few ways. Simply choose your desired studio location here to get started. You can view each studio's available class packages and schedule and book it right here on our site, which is accessible from your computer, tablet or mobile device. Once you choose a class, you'll be asked to select your starting spot. This is the assigned number (tread or floor) where you'll begin your workout. When the class transitions, you'll swap positions but keep your same number throughout the duration of the class. If you were to start on tread #4, you'd change to floor bench #4 during transition. And vice versa. Please note that you will first need to have purchased an eligible class package or membership in order to redeem and book your spot. We hear this one all the time. What kind of workout would it be if you had to be in shape BEFORE getting in shape? People start Barry's at all levels of fitness. Some were athletes when they started, others had never stepped on a treadmill in their lives. Barry's Bootcamp is for everyone.
Not at all! That's the great thing about running as a cardio exercise. Our bodies were designed to run (from lions, from tigers, from bears, after potential cavemates). It's something everyone can do. Our trainers will correct your gait if necessary, and even if you're not a great runner now, you'll grow and mature the more you run on our cushy treadmills. Our Woodway treadmills are more comfortable for running than the hard pavement, so if you want to start somewhere, Barry's is the perfect place. Countless numbers of our clients who hated running before they started Barry's have gone on to run in 5Ks, 10Ks, mud runs, half-marathons, and full marathons!
You're going to be running and doing resistance and weight training. You want to wear comfortable exercise clothing and a good pair of athletic shoes. We sell water and sports drinks, but you're welcome to bring your own (and you definitely want to stay hydrated). Most locations have towel service where we provide clean, fresh towels for your visit, but just in case you should check your studio's page for specifics on amenities offered.
Every class is a beginner's class and an expert's class and everything in between. The instructor gives suggestions for every level of fitness and experience. And you can start with any class on any day. You might want to begin with a class dedicated to the body part you most want to change. Or try us on a Friday through Sunday for a full body workout. When you arrive in class, let the instructor know that it's your first Barry's class so he or she can guide you through the process. It's a good idea to arrive 15 minutes early for your first class to sign up and check-in.
Yes, but only to give you a shout-out and to cheer you on! We just can't contain ourselves when we see a member of our bootcamp family kicking so much butt. Despite the military moniker, Barry's Bootcamp is anything but military in attitude. We're really really nice, pinky swear! Our trainers may look intimidatingly muscular, but they are here to support you, motivate you, and get you to your goals. We are here to Pump. You. Up. In every way - inside and out. Besides, we have microphones - we don't need to yell.
Despite what a few of our regular bootcampers might think (evidenced by how they obsessive they are about "their" treadmill) every treadmill at Barry's is created equal. You are welcome to reserve any open treadmill when you book your class. After you complete your round on the treadmill, simply find the corresponding bench number and place your water or towel there while you get a fresh mat and your weights (as instructed by your trainer). So if you begin on tread #4, for instance, you'd transition to floor bench #4 when instructed. And vice versa. Easy peasy. Where you stand in relation to your bench while doing standing exercises depends on your studio's location—in some studios we stand to the right of the bench, in others to the left. Just watch the other bootcampers for an indication of where you should stand. If everyone is standing to the left, don't be a rebel.
Take your pick. Most people prefer to start on the treadmill, but some recent studies have shown that you actually burn more calories when you start with resistance training! Whichever you choose as your starting spot, you'll stay with the same assigned number throughout class during transitions.
DING! That was the sound of the glint of light shining off the spotless floor. We clean our floors, treadmills and equipment between every class, and sometimes during class as well. We also provide clean mats each class for you to use on your bench.
You will be working out in the comfort of our state-of-the-art studios, inside, and out of the elements. Our studios are equipped with the best treadmills in the world, the latest resistance training gear, flattering lighting (because we know you're looking at your biceps in the mirrors), the latest sound systems, MALIN+GOETZ products in the bathroom, and at most locations a protein shake bar known as the FuelBar.* So no, you won't have to dodge elderly people and children in the park or chase after the ice cream truck for a post-workout snack.

Every location does have lockers for you to store your stuff. Most locations have lockers with digital codes, so there's no need to bring your own lock. However, some of our older locations do not yet have those lockers.* The lockers at these locations are in class, so you should be able to keep an eye on your goods or feel free to bring your own lock.

18 is the magic number at Barry's Bootcamp. If you can vote, grab your coat! (It was either that, or "you can be a dreamboat.") But if you are 16 or 17 and your parent or guardian signs for you, you are also welcome to join us!
This varies by studio. If you purchase a 10-pack on your first day because you love Barry's so much (and we hope you do), we sometimes comp your first class and many bootcampers have started that way. We recommend contacting your local studio directly regarding special pricing or any seasonal promotions we may have at the time. There is no way to book a complimentary first class on our website.
The price varies from city to city, due to the varied costs of doing business in different places and the assortment of included amenities offered. Select your nearest location and go to the "Buy" link for a menu of pricing options. Buying a single class is the priciest way to attend Barry's Bootcamp. We sell packages of classes at a lower cost and have some excellent membership options as well. Different locations have different packages, but all standard class packs have a one (1) year expiration date and may be shared or transferred to others.*
*Depending on location, specific class packs purchased prior to 2015 have no expiration date. Our Nashville studio does not offer class sharing.
When you purchase a package, you buy a specific number of classes that are valid for one (1) year. For instance, you get 10 classes with a 10-pack (imagine that) to use for a whole year. When you purchase a membership, you get an almost unlimited number of classes to use for a limited amount of time. For example, with a Silver Monthly membership you get up to 40 classes to use in a month. So, to recap: Class package - any time but within a year of purchase. Your mama taught you to share, and your mama is always right. Your class package is totally shareable and transferable*. Your membership, however, is not transferable or shareable. So it turns out your mama is not always right.
*Our Nashville studio does not allow sharing of class packs.
We realize that some of you go deluxe whenever possible. Gucci running shoes with 14K gold-tipped laces, bottled water extracted from the clouds over St. Tropez, and a Barry's Bootcamp MVP membership. The MVP Membership is only available in select locations, and you wouldn't have it any other way. With the MVP membership you can cancel 3 hours in advance with a full refund or credit rather than the normal 12-hour window, book your choice of classes (including choosing your preferred treadmill spot) 2 weeks in advance instead of just 1, put yourself at the top of the waiting list for a sold out class, and use our concierge service, which means that our concierge books your classes and treadmill for you. Your gorgeous fingers never have to touch that nasty keyboard.
Months with five Mondays are very special at Barry's. Starting on the 5th Monday of the month, Hellweek participants take either 5 (M-F) or 7 (M-S) straight days of classes, one per day, at a special price.* Hellweek is the fast track to a heavenly physique.

Classes are in session, and an Academy will ensure you an A+ in Fitness 101. A new Academy begins on the first Monday of each month, and for a special rate you pick your favorite class time and you attend that particular time slot Monday - Friday, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. Please note that once you purchase an Academy, you're still responsible for reserving your spot each day during the 4 weeks of your program. It's up to you how hard you work, but if you cram every day you're bound to graduate summa cum hottie.
Some locations don't lock you in to a pre-chosen class time every day for their Academies - you can show up to whichever class you want, Monday through Friday. Classes are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. At most locations you can choose the 3-day, 4-day or 5-day Flex Academy, which refers to the number of days per week you want to attend.* Again, attending the Flex Academy guarantees you a preferred rate.

There's a reason some people call this contraption a DREADmill, and the reason is Dynamic Mode. Sometimes (often when you least expect it) you will be asked to set your treadmill in dynamic mode (the instructor will show you how). In dynamic mode, YOU, not electricity, are powering the treadmill. Some love it, others don't. However you feel about it, your quadriceps will feel sore about it.
A delicious, nutritious, splendiferous way to hydrate yourself and give your body the proper nutrition it needs after class. Our FuelBar, available at most locations*, offers a menu full of protein shakes and drinks to tease just about every taste bud.

You know how to order, just put your lips together and... Oh, that's not what you meant, is it? The best way to order a shake is to place your order before your workout, and just like magic it will be waiting for you when you stumble out of class. We'll charge it to the card we have on file, and it will bear your name. It might even have a cute little drawing, if you're really nice to our 'Smoothie Operators'. In some locations, you can even pre-order your smoothie when you book your class online and it'll be waiting for you after your class. Nifty, huh?
You bet! But we might ask you to jumping jacks, just for our own amusement.
Most of our locations have perfect post-workout meals ready-to-go. Depending on your location, you might find gourmet goods from Greenleaf Chopshop, haute helpings from Hu Kitchen, or possibly even fresh coconuts in Miami Beach.
Simply put, these Velcro strap-on bands are the express route to a strong, great-looking derriere. You're bound to use them on Legs & Butt day or Full Body day at Barry's, or you can buy your own for home use here. Use them in your exercise room, in front of the TV, in your bedroom. We cannot endorse the use of them for anything other than exercise, but hey, we support personal expression.
Some of our classes sell out. But if the class you want is sold out, you can get on our wait list. As people cancel, we pick from our wait list in order. If you get a spot more than 12 hours before the scheduled start time of the class, we will notify you by email. If a spot doesn't open 12 hours before class, you still have a chance of getting in. Just show up at least 5 minutes before class starts. That's when we see how many reserved spots didn't show up, and we start going through the wait list in order. Hopefully you'll get in! If not, we can play charades in the lobby.
Pretty good, actually! It depends on the class, and in some classes we have a higher no-show rate than others. It depends how far back you are on the wait list as well. So if you have a little time to kill you might want to come in and chance it. Your odds are better than you'd get in Vegas.
If you cancel any class, at any time, you must drop and give us 30 burpees. No matter where you are. And don't give us 26, because we're watching you. Just kidding. A class must be changed or canceled prior to 12 hours before the scheduled class time or it will be forfeited. You must be physically present 5 minutes prior to the start of class or your spot will be given away to waitlisted clients and you will be charged for the class. This long standing policy helps to ensure that we can accommodate all of our clients who would like to get their bootcamp on.
If you are outside the 12 hour no-cancellation window, you can always move to another class (that is not sold out). If you need to move your appointment but there is less than 12 hours until your scheduled class, that would be considered a cancellation and the above cancellation policy would apply. Sorry, no exceptions.
You'll cry a little, we'll cry a little. We'll want to hug it out next time we see you. In terms of class policy, if you miss a class it's considered a last minute cancellation (see cancellation policy above).
If the class is not sold out, then being late won't cost you anything but a couple hundred calories. Just check in and come in, but try not to disturb the bootcampers who have already begun class. And try to stay clear of the moving treadmills for safety reasons. However, if the class is sold out, at 5 minutes before class starts we will open all remaining spots to people on the wait list, and we will consider you a cancellation. So please do what your mother told you and don't be late.
7 days. At noon, exactly one week early, we release all classes for a given day. So if it's Tuesday, for instance, you can book the following Tuesday's classes beginning at 12:00pm. On Wednesday at noon, you can book the following Wednesday and so on and so forth. For the most popular classes, we guarantee that there are people staring at their computer at 11:59am, fingers at the ready, to pounce on the classes once they are open for reservations. If you have an MVP Membership (see above) you can reserve up to two weeks in advance, and chances of you not getting your preferred classes are slim to none.
Walk in, run in, fly in (we have lockers for your jetpack), however you can get here, we want you. Keep in mind that some classes are sold out, so you might not get a spot if you don't reserve in advance. But we often have no-shows as well, so your chances of getting a spot are pretty good. They're better if you get yourself on the wait list ahead of time.
Unless you live on the fiery, volcanic surface of Venus, the answer is most likely YES! But rather than opening 100 locations in a year, we are rolling out a measured pace so that we can uphold our very high standards of quality. We want your workout to be as intense and fun as possible, your studio to be as up-to-date and luxe as our best, and your trainers to be as experienced and entertaining as Barry himself. Yes, our online reservation platform will let you choose your starting position from the available spots. But did you know that studies show that you're most likely going to burn more fat by starting on the floor work, not the treadmill? So be a "treadsetter" and get that six-pack while your buddies are still working on a two-pack.
We have a very convenient way for you to check that! (Aren't we sweet?) Just sign in to your account and you should be able to view all of your account information.
We did have an app, but it was essentially just a schedule and we've strategically decided to retire it for now while we work on an even better experience for our clients. The little people who live in your computer have redesigned our website so that you can access the schedules and reserve your starting spot more directly here on our site from your mobile device or tablet. So bookmark it, but fret not! Keep an eye out for our app to be reborn from the ashes when it's polished and ready. It will have all kinds of fancy functions. We might even include a calculator and a device that keeps time (we're calling it a "clock")!
How cute is he/she? Kidding. We'd love to say yes, but we're not currently set up for that. However, if your child is old enough to sit for an hour without needing supervision, there's usually a place to sit and hang out just outside the workout room. But our desk staff is in constant motion, and won't be able to keep an eye on your bundle of joy/drool/energy/angst.
Currently, classes are city-specific. That means that if you buy classes at Chelsea in NYC, you can also use them at Tribeca or Noho. Ditto in Los Angeles. However, as classes are city-specific, they are not transferable from one city to another at this time.
We feel ya'. You do NOT have to do the treadmill if you don't want to. We have a number of clients do what's called "double floor", where they spend the entire class doing weight resistance work. You can now select the "double floor" (DF) option when you book your class online, depending on availability. We can't always guarantee availability, so be sure to reserve it ahead of time just to be safe. But don't think you're getting out of cardio—our floor work involves plenty of heart-pumping cardio to melt away your fat and calories.
Technically you can, if class is not full. But why on earth would you want to do that?
NO - you are around moving machines and weights and other people using them. It's dangerous and distracting to others and though you may have your phone with you for emergencies, calls and texts are strictly forbidden. It is very dangerous. And we genuinely hate to say we told you so. Please step outside the studio to text or make calls.
As long as the injury isn't decapitation, there's something at Barry's you can do. First, speak with your doctor about what you should and shouldn't do. If the doctor clears you, mention your injury to the instructor when you arrive. The instructor can help you with modifications based on your situation. You might want to try "double floor" if you can't run - that means staying on the floor and doing resistance exercises for the entire class and foregoing the treadmill. Just pay attention to your body and don't do anything that hurts your injury. Actually, even a decapitation doesn't have to prevent you from a good workout - there's always Romanian headlifts. Bud-dum-bum.
Most nutritionists recommend eating something 30-60 minutes before class to give you energy to make it though the workout and protein to build and tone muscles. Just make sure you don't get too full. Eating a big meal before working out is a recipe for disaster. Try something that it is in the 200-300 calorie range and includes some sugars, carbs and protein. Or better yet, get to Barry's early and grab a protein bar or shake! (Did we just slip into sales mode there?)
Protein, protein, protein! And in case the fourth time is a charm...PROTEIN! Studies differ a bit on how long your optimal window is for protein consumption after a workout (some say 30-60 minutes, other say the first four hours), but all agree that the sooner you consume some protein, the better. Why? When you work your muscles hard, you are breaking down muscle. You need amino acids, found in protein, to repair those muscles. This is what tones your body. Also, more muscle means faster metabolism, and that means more calorie burn throughout the day, even when you're sitting on your butt. If you ask us (and you just did), the best way to get your protein is with a liquid infusion - a protein shake, right after class. Most of our locations have a FuelBar set up in the lobby with a menu of delicious shakes full of healthy ingredients.
Barry's does not endorse any particular meal plan. Our clients and trainers practice lots of different eating plans that work well for them. Here's a sample of Barry's eating habits and those of Rebecca Kennedy, one of our New York trainers. No matter the "diet," most of our trainers follow a whole food plan, eating foods that have not been processed to the point where they are no longer recognizable. Think lots of fruits and veggies, proteins, and whole grains. With an occasional cheat meal to keep one sane.
Well, first ask your doctor. But we can tell you that we've had moms coming in one week post-partum, and moms-to-be working out until days before they gave birth. Make sure your doctor knows what a Barry's workout entails (running and weight training) and find out what you're cleared to do. But new moms deserve extra love and attention, and we promise to give it to you.
Barry recommends 5 classes per week as an optimal number, with 3 classes per week being a minimum. If you're only coming twice a week, every time might feel like your first time again. Keeping steady means building endurance. You can certainly take more than 5 classes per week, and many of our bootcampers do, but we recommend a rest day to give your sore muscles time to repair themselves (that's when they grows!). WARNING: You may become addicted. Luckily, we have a 12,000 step program for that.
Deep breaths, this can happen, and it's not bad news. If you've been weighing yourself all your life, you've been doing it wrong (no offense). The best way to check your progress as you improve your body and health is not by monitoring your weight, but by monitoring your measurements. As you work out more, you will gain muscle mass and lose fat. This will give your body the tone you're looking for. So if you gain weight, it will be the kind you want - muscle that speeds up your metabolism which leads to more calories burned throughout the day. So don't measure your weight, measure your waist, your chest, your arms, your legs, your butt. And check how your clothes are fitting. You will also probably put on a little water weight since your sore muscles will be retaining water.
Barry's Bootcampers see results fast. If you are going 3-5 times a week, expecting to notice a change in your body before the first month is out. Your loved ones will probably see a difference in 2-3 months, and your friends (the observant ones, and the ones who have a crush on you) will probably notice in 4-6 months. But you will notice a psychological change almost immediately. You'll feel better about yourself, you'll be more motivated to work out, and seeing the heads whipping around as you stroll by doesn't exactly hurt your ego.
